Massa Marittima – Mining Museum
Address: Via Corridoni- Massa Marittima
The Museum is the result of the transformation of a former mine quarry for building materials into three tunnels used as a shelter during World War II. In 1980 the galleries were set up by miners who realistically reproduced the interior environment of a mine. The museum tour runs for about 700 metres, through secondary and main galleries where different types of reinforcemnt structures used to support the vaults can be seen, documenting the different techniques used to extract the ore. Numerous working tools, machinery and wagons still in use a few years ago are also on display. In the future, this museum and the Museum of Mining History and Art (currently not open to visitors), which contains important finds and evidence of mining activity, will merge into a single mining museum centre: Underground The museum itinerary is only accessible with the accompaniment of a guide, which is included in the price of the entrance ticket. The Mining Museum is one of the Gates of the Parco Nazionale delle Colline Metallifere Grossetane: it provides information and bookings for guided visits to places of geo-mineral interest.
