Gerfalco – Visitor Centre of the Cornate and Fosini Reserve

Address: Via Arduini Barlettai – Gerfalco (GR)

It is the gateway to the Cornate di Gerfalco – Fosini Regional Nature Reserve. The Cornate (1081 m) is the highest peak and one of the wildest and least known areas of the Colline Metallifere. They form one of the few mountain habitat areas in southern Tuscany. Wolf, wild cat, marten, short-toed eagle, lanner, Etruscan violet and fritillary are just some of the many species of animals and plants of conservation interest that have been found in the protected area. The Reserve is an SAC of the Natura 2000 European network and in the Grosseto part there are also two geosites of the park: the Cave of red ammonitic limestone and the Trincee delle Cornate di Gerfalco. The visitor centre is also the gateway to the adjacent geological site of the Poggio Mutti Quarries and Mines.

Montieri is a medieval mining village known for the great wealth of its subsoil, linked to the presence of minerals (sulphides) containing silver and copper. The village is overlooked by the Poggio of the same name, the second highest peak in the park (1031 m). It is covered at the higher altitudes by a dense beech forest, while the lower altitudes are dominated by chestnut and mixed oak woods. Inside the wood are the remains of the ancient church of S. Niccolò, with its characteristic flower shape with six petals, a unique example in Italy.
